Healthy Protein Chocolate Milkshake

I’m not gonna lie, my healthy protein chocolate milkshake is so good you’ll want to have it everyday. It’s full of protein and a great summer post-workout shake. If you want to make it extra decadent top it with light whipped cream and chocolate syrup.

Here’s what you’ll need to make this milkshake

  • Chocolate Protein Powder – I like to use the brand MusclePharm Combat Chocolate Milk Protein Powder which has 25g of protein per scoop.
  • Yogurt – I like using a whole milk or 2% plain yogurt so that the shake isn’t too thin. Astro Original Balkan is my favourite plain yogurt. You could use greek yogurt aswell.
  • Unsweetened Almond Milk – please not that you can use any milk you want in the recipe, or even good ol’ water! When I do use almond milk I like to use the brand Earth’s Own Unsweetened Original Almond Milk.
  • Jell-o Fat Free Chocolate Instant Pudding – okay, this stuff adds such a nice consistency and thickness to this shake, it’s a must!
  • Cocoa Powder – for chocolate feens but mainly to make the shake extra chocolate-y.
  • Vanilla Extract – a splash of vanilla for extra flavour, feel free to skip this one.
  • Ice – duh! We can’t make this milkshake without some ice. A pro tip is to make ice cubes with your milk of choice ahead of time and use those alongside your regular ice. This helps thicken up your shake.
  • Optional Toppings – I topped my chocolate milkshake with Gay Lea’s Light Whipped Cream and Nesquik’s Less Sugar Chocolate Syrup. Do keep in mind this will add extra calories to your drink. I only add it to mine on special occasions as the milkshake already tastes like a treat on it’s own to me.

Now let’s chat about protein powder for a sec. If you aren’t using a protein powder, it’s a great way to sneak in extra protein into your diet. We could always use more. Protein helps you stay full and it even takes your body more energy to digest and leaves you feeling full. There are a wide variety of protein powders, and it’s best to find one that you’ll enjoy. I usually purchase mine from CanadianProtein.com or I find the brand MusclePharm at Costco.

If you’re into working out like I am, this protein shake is even better when you add a half of a banana as it adds good healthy carbs and potassium.

Invest in a good blender

I’ve tried a couple different blenders and along the way I realized the importance in investing in a high-powered blender to make delicious shakes, smoothies, ice creams and much more on the savoury side too. I currently have a Ninja stand mixer which is an affordable blender which consistently gives me great results.

I have the Nutri Ninja Blender Duo with Auto-iQ which also comes with super helpful Nutri Ninja Cups for on-the-go.

Look at that consistency! That’s a nice, thick milkshake pour if you ask me. Thanks to my Ninja, I’m able to crush ice in seconds to create the creamy frozen milkshake. I ended up running the Frozen Drinks setting twice to get a nice smooth texture.
